New Paper Suggests The Reason Why We Haven’t Found Alien Life Yet

alien

Growing up with sci-fi films and TV shows has really given us all an unrealistic idea of what the future (ie. the present) was going to be like. I genuinely thought we would have found alien life by now. Or they would’ve found us. But no.

Why is that, though? We’ve got crazy powerful telescopes and communication devices, as well as space travel being really advanced. Surely, by now we should’ve discovered… something?!

Well, a new paper seems to think that the reason behind it is that all is – and this sucks – that there isn’t any.

Aditya Chopra and Charles H. Lineweaver, both academics who work at the Planetary Science Institute, The Australian National University, have got a new theory that they call ‘The Gaian Bottleneck’. The premise behind it being that yes, the percentage of planets needed to create a habitable atmosphere are high, however they simply don’t remain that way for long enough.

The paper says: “In the Gaian bottleneck model, the maintenance of planetary habitability is a property more associated with an unusually rapid evolution of biological regulation of surface volatiles than with the luminosity and distance to the host star.

“Such a Gaian bottleneck suggests that (i) extinction is the cosmic default for most life that has ever emerged on the surfaces of wet rocky planets in the Universe and (ii) rocky planets need to be inhabited to remain habitable.”

The Independent put this all in words that you and I find it easy to understand… “the reason we haven’t found any aliens yet is that quite simply while the percentage of life-sustaining environments could be high enough, they’re not around long enough for them to evolve from the pools of primordial life.”

Hillary Clinton At The Benghazi Testimony

hilary Clinton

Hillary Clinton, the Democratic front runner, was before the Benghazi House Select Committee and called it a long day. She participated in the DNC Women’s Leadership Forum on Friday morning. Even after 11 hours of work her voice was still hoarse. Clinton said she was happy to have got the answers. She affirms that the goal is to move from partisanship to
statesmanship. Campaign aides were happy with her presentation but said that the debate last week was a bigger success as it showcased her strength. The fundraising was at its best during 9 PM and 10 PM just while she was wrapping her testimony.

Hillary Clinton also focushillary-clinton-gettyed on women’s rights and also touched on the political events that happened this week. She praised the vice president Joe Biden and said that history doesn’t stop with him despite him denying running for the president. She also subtly attacked her competitor Sen Bernie Sander who said all the shouting in the world” cannot put solve gun control issue. She countered the comment by saying that when women talk people think they are shouting. This came for a big appreciation for the women. The aides said that Clinton was calm and cool during the speech though they conveyed frustration over her ally Sidney Blumenthal.

Obama Visits Roseburg Victims, Gun Control Debate Heats Up

obama's Speak

The gun control issue has taken center stage with the Umpqua community college shoot out. The President Obama is in Roseburg, Oregon to meet the family members of the victim. This has given the administration an opportunity to reconsider the gun control proposal by introducing new guidelines for those licensed gun dealers. Moreover, background checks need to be conducted to potential buyers informs administration officials. Those who sell a particular number of guns in a year are subjected to the law framed for gun dealers. The threshold has been fixed at 50 to 100 guns in a year to fall into this category. The number is yet to be formalized.

The policy is complicated informs an administration official. After the Oregon
shooting where 9 people were killed and the same number were injured, Obama has promised to have the gun laws reformed by pulling down the existing gun law. The view expressed by the president is that the opposition party always interferes in the proposal for gun control provisions. The executive order to conduct background checks for gun sales failed to see the light of the day in the Senate in 2013. The complications of defining who is a gun dealer made it difficult to get through branding the executive order illegal.Obama

But the committee is reconsidering the issue of the order to review the gun policy after the Umpqua Community College shoot out. The idea got a new lease of life when the Democratic Party presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said that she would take action on this if elected to power. Meanwhile, the Michael Bloomberg funded group also urged Obama to take up the policy. The senior counsel of Everytown said that hundreds of thousands of guns are sold without background checks. The National Rifle Association informed that there is little data on gun purchase, and it is not clear how the sales would be affected.
